Being a bit obsessed with getting our home page full of upcoming events, I had a thought.
Most web geek people know that buying an ad on the home page of Yahoo or MSN is a very big expenditure that brings huge amounts of traffic and hopefully, a return. Myspace makes a lot of their cash this way too.
We certainly aren't driving that kind of traffic. But, it's on a steady predictable rise. Plus, we drive traffic to events in other ways. Our home page is our most trafficked page, though.
I was taking a look at the events on our home page and did some quick math to determine that, on average, we make $2k from an event that is on the home page. Of course, we do different things for each event. For some, we just put up the site and send out an email. For some, they put up the site and send out the email simply using our system. For others, we recruit and manage marketing campaigns with lots of partners. For others, we line up panelists and media sponsors. For others, we sell sponsorship and make extra $ there. For some, we keep all of the money that is earned through the registration. For some, we just keep a cut of the registration dollars.
Given that we'll have about 12 events on the home page by the end of the week, you can do the math. The goal is to make $5k/event on average. And for the featured listing to cover a maximum of 3 months of activity. We'd be happy with higher numbers, of course.
