So, You Want Public Criticism?

Greg Narain has a post saying that he invented "social podcasting".  I agree that he did. Or atleast he introduced it to me. And I know he introduced it to a lot of other people in North America and beyond. Everyone I then introduced it to thought it was crazy. But, when Greg drove from NYC to Worcester to help us have a beercasting event, everyone that was there, loved it.

I started to write a comment to Greg on this post, and it is something that I've been telling him delicately for awhile now. Because it was criticism, I sent him an email instead.  I genuinely want the criticism to be helpful. And I know I can be bluntly honest with Greg, because I knew he wouldn't be offended. Or if he was offended, it wouldn't effect our relationship.

I basically told Greg that he wouldn't have to blog that he invented social podcasting if he had successfully commercialized it. What I should have said is "Stop bitching, Greg. Pick an idea. Pick a business model. Ship some code. And get 100 customers."

In response to my email, Greg made a post titled "Innovation != Commercialization". I couldn't disagree more. Here's Greg's rational:

The point? Innovation has nothing to do with commericalization - except if money is your only metric for success. I'm more than content with both the work I did, the recognition I've received in the process, and the leverage it's given me in other situations.

In closing, contribute something and be proud of it.  If you can't, don't deride others who have.

First, a little more background: Greg has shared more good ideas with me than anyone I know. He also has entrepreneurial ADD. From my vantage point, he has changed course every 6 months for the last few years that I've known him. Along the way, he's figured out how to pay the bills. And I've never seen him unhappy. But, I also am fairly confident that if he stuck with one idea (any of them - they are all good), he would be well on his way to  being a wealthy person. And seemingly more important to him, he'd be recognized for inventing things. And have the cash to finance a lot more of his inventions.

For what it's worth, Greg, I think you are a genius. A consummate innovator. Part of the 1% of the population that can analyze markets, people, players and technology and figure out a plan for profit. And I'd like you to be recognized by more people in this way.

But, the key is FOCUS and PERSISTENCE. I am not doubting you are persistent. I know you've been zigzagging across the country recording public podcasts for people for pay. I know that you've been supporting your family as a freelancer for a long time. But businesses aren't created with ideas and the persistence of one guy. They are built on top of repeatable duplicatable processes that are done over and over again by more and more people.

So, my advice, and I feel I can say this because I am doing it too, is stick with ONE idea for 2 years atleast. And make a business out of it. One that scales on the backs of more than just you and your hussle. You've got the innovation down. You've got the persistent thing down. Let's just pull that together with some focus.

Now. So, I sent the stuff above and asked him if he wanted me to publicly post it. He said yes. We both are of the opinion that we learn more by being transparent and getting brutal feedback, than if we keep secrets and pretend we have everything figured out.

In response to the post above, Greg already published another post. I can't possibly cover all the points he brings up in it. But, he still wonders why I think that innovation requires commercialization. So, I should clarify. I don't think that every innovation requires that the inventor commercializes it. But, every inventor that wants to generate income from their inventions must learn how to commercialize them. That's my point. I want Greg to commercialize just one of his brilliant ideas, so that the world is a better place, he puts some money in his pocket, he can finance a lot of other world changing innovations and most importanly: I can then say, I told you so.

Lastly, in Greg's post, he fires a little criticism back at me. He says that we've been a bit too focussed with WhizSpark. That we've missed opportunities because we are too focussed. Head strong might be the better word. And I am sure my partner would disagree about my ability to stay focussed. I have a lot more to say about that. But, it'll have to be another post.
