Awhile ago, (Before Stowe started begging for links to his new blog. Click that. It's too funny.) I posted about my blog to comment ratio. It was 0.9.
Now, it is:
Posts: 1694 | Comments: 2245 | TrackBacks: 339
1694/2245 = 0.75 (My old methodology.)
1694/ (2245+ 339) = 0.66 (Stowe's "I'm stretching the conversational aspect" methodology)
(Of course, I haven't been real good about deleting comment and trackback spam on old posts.)
At the time, I was wondering what the norm was for blog to comment ratio? And what it said about me?
Johnnie Moore, Zoli Erdos, Don Dodge and Stowe Boyd have some theories.
I simply think that it is because I ask a lot of questions and people humor me with answers. And because I say a lot of stupid things, and people yell back at me. And because I ask people for their feedback sometimes on specific posts. Because I link to people when they ask for a little attention or link love. Because I've asked for links before. I use my blog as a social and feedback tool. A way to make new friends and keep in touch with people I've met around the country.
What's Your Post to Comment/Trackback Ratio? What's it say about you?
Are you counting your own comments to your own entries as comments, or posts?
If you're counting them as comments, could you recount them as posts instead then recompute the ratio? Also, compute the ratio of your posts vs. only comments/trackbacks from people other than yourself.
Stats for my own blog:
sqlite> select count(*) from mt_entry where entry_blog_id = 2;
202
sqlite> select count(*) from mt_comment where comment_blog_id = 2;

sqlite> select count(*) from mt_comment where comment_blog_id = 2 and comment_author != 'Dossy';

So, 202 posts, 141 comments (87 by others, 54 by me). (202+54)/87 = 2.94. 202/87 = 2.32.
People just don't care to comment on my blog. :-) That, and until very recently, I wasn't allowing anonymous comments -- you had to create an account on my blog and authenticate the email address. Now, I've got open anonymous comments again (but anonymous comments require moderation by me before they'll appear on the site). Hopefully this will make commenting happen more often.

Hey Dossy. There's no quick way for me to eliminate my own comments. (I am using typepad, so I can't run any SQL queries against the db.) Nor do I think this is a very scientific way of analyzing anything. Maybe it is a way to correlate style to rough numbers. But, it is far from science.

The ratio doesn't really mean too much, as the less you post, the higher the ratio. I suspect total comments/trackbacks is a lot more meaningful.

I usually calculate it the other way around -- comments per post, but doing it as PCTR, I come up with 0.21 (roughly 4.7 comments per post).
