The Upsell

Not that this is anything new in internet-land, if Microsoft is caving-in (and they have the most to lose of anyone - their paid software on a disc business), then resistance seems futile:

Microsoft will have both free and paid offerings on Windows Live and Office Live, where basic services will be advertising-supported. The company will then try to entice or "upsell" customers to purchase subscriptions for more advanced and feature-rich services.

I am non-plussed re: the Windows Live offering. It is a bit immature. TechCrunch has more substantial-ness including the wow factor on VOIP and MS's approach to gadgets. And outlook like functionality for hotmail. Maybe I'll start using hotmail for more than just newsletters.  This could be the beginning of some big stuff.

Glad to see a 3rd Web 2.0 horse finally taking shape.
