No matter what it is or why it was created, once something acquires financial value its creators will try to make some money off it. The CDDB became Gracenote.  The Firefox browser is beginning to be used as a base for commercial ventures like Flock. Cool tool and initially business-planless del.icio.us took some venture capital and is attempting to become a profitable enterprise. Wordpress.org is giving birth to Wordpress.com.  Drupal has its Bryght.  Even Craigslist - a great example of a website that’s not aggressively capitalist - took in some money from eBay. None of these examples are all that different from Yahoo, which started as a hobby.

Show me a blogger [supposedly] blogging for the common good, and I'll show you two that blog for their own personal gain.

I should probably note (since Craig mentioned it to me) that the eBay-Craigslist transaction was due to the sale of an ex-employee's cut. But aside from that, yep.

It's not quite that simple -- consider that the Mozilla Foundation has also launched the Mozilla Corporation.

Our work at Flock isn't directed at digging for gold. Prior to working at Flock I worked at CivicSpace -- a tool used for organizing the grassroots Dean campaign now being used for all kinds of progressive activism. I left CivicSpace to join Flock because I realized that my ideas and efforts would be more effective directed at creating better and more powerful publishing tools that can publish to CMS' like Drupal or WordPress. Though paying the rent is important, my goal is to help democratize access to technology by making it easier to use and therefore more universally empowering.

I dunno, maybe I'm young, dumb and naive, but I have a sense that us Bay Area geeks are fighting the good fight -- one that the intitial Dot Commers seemed to lose sight of. At least in my circle, we like to call this the Dot Org Open Source revolution.

Chris, I think what you are pointing out is that personal gain and world enrichment aren't mutually exclusive.

In fact, personal gain (financially and otherwise) often occurs when - individually - our professional goals have meaning to the rest of the world.

This is something I am definitely wrestling with after reading Guy Kawasaki's, Art of the Start, last week. In it, he discusses that a key ingredient to any successful company is to have a higher purpose.

After spending some time with a personal coach yesterday, I am starting to elucidate what some of that "special purpose" could be.
