Mini-Media

Mernit & Rubel have an interesting back and forth going on about how ebay, craigslist, even Amazon will allow the future of mini-media companies, enabling the wider citizen's media to generate mini-media type revenues.  That is definitely true for commerce in products. It is not true for the services business or the advertising business.

Please read their posts for background. My thought is that... half of the equation is there. That half is: The tools are available for the individual to get attention, so that advertising can be sold or products hawked from the attention they've earned.

The other half is missing: The tools aren't available yet to use that attention to generate a livelihood. The blog publishing companies like weblogsinc are doing well (they need more ad inventory), but the reason they are doing fine is because they have offline sales of advertising.  With the ad tools and tech that are available to the masses today (adsense etc), we can't make a living (unless you own a joke or porn site).  With the current state of ad tools, for the rest of us to make cash on the level that the pro bloggers are making, we need a salesperson selling our inventory.   So, the barrier to entry in making money in blogging is 50-80k or the cost of a full time ad salesperson.  Most of us bloggers don't have that $ - or if we do - are spending it more wisely to build processes/tools that reduce that barrier to entry, so that other people can make it happen.

Meanwhile, If anyone with mini-media ambitions wants to make mini-media money while we test and develop our tools, please holler.

Yep, you got it. But recognize that more and more, Amazon, eBay etc are platform companies with available and distributed APIs(eBay is not right now but they support lots of develpers)--and the long tail will allow more and more small businesses (ie indibiduals) to create and sell goods and services--as well as advertising.
I think that for bloggers etc the $$ will move from 95% ad revenue, 5% transactions to 40% transactions, 60% ad revenue--a sigificant shift and one that shows individuals paying each other for things. More over at mernit's.
