My first stab at this request.
Wanted: Software or script that browses the web, identifies specific types of content, such as locations/venues and extracts the contact from the html pages and uploads it into a database in a standardized format.
I know people do this. But, don't know anyone that specifically does this.
Two reasons why I want this:
1. To Populate a database of locations. When someone enters an event into WhizSpark, they can search for a location, and avoid entering it. It makes it a lot easier, but it isn't very easy now, because the database isn't very full yet.
2. Identifying potential customers and their contact information: address, phone, email. To use this contact data as a list for cold-calling or cold-emailing people. It'd be nice, if the search tool could identify and categorize listings into types of contacts, like nightclubs vs charitable organizations vs convention centers.
[I know the second one, sounds dangerously close to spam, but I always send personalized messages to people when I send email, and I usually call, instead of email people. Whenever possible, I prefer to contact them through a mutual connection. Anyways, this is besides the point.]
Does anyone know of any software that does this, scripts that do this or companies that offer this service?
Joe Bartling suggested infoUSA, but they are ridiculously expensive.
I think this could be a great service offering for a new search company to differentiate themselves. local-i comes to miind.
