You can set this up for next to nothing; check out www.pligg.com; open source digg-clone in PHP.

Do the user-submitted sites that exist, such as Eventful/Upcoming analyze users usage patterns to determine what is popular? Also, would you want to distinguish between user-submitted events, and just importing events and letting users vote on them (I've played around a bit with getting a digg clone up and running, and from my limited experiements, the hardest part is getting folks to submit stuff, and only somewhat less difficult to get them to vote.)

I chatted with Tim Grahl about pligg.
There'd be some configuration to make it worthwhile for events. Also, what does a "digg" mean when someone votes for an event. Does it mean they are going? It would make most sense for a zvents, upcoming or eventful to do this.

What's needed is for registration/RSVP/ticketing systems to rank events by how many people are going. It'll be awhile before registration systems go social, I think. Maybe then, a ranking system would be a good idea.

Of course, if anyone wanted to try throwing this out there, If it took off, I know we could monetize it through affiliate marketing for events :)

Eventful does this already to a certain extent, but there isn't a lot of data to support it yet. We have a value (mojo) which works more like Flickr's interestingness than Digg. It's based on who's going + various other ways of judging user interest. It's used to determine relevance when sorting, so it's not nearly as obvious as a dugg score.

If you're interested in mashing up something more directly Digg-like, please do include Eventful data. I'd love to see the results.
