Where's the Money to Be Made from the Long Tail?

My short answer: Companies that drive revenue through having lots of affiliates.

My slightly longer way of saying the same thing: All this content that is being produced in the Long Tail will be amassed by aggregators. They will need a revenue model. Or multiple ones. The most obvious model is to generate revenue as affiliates of ad networks. Right now, CPC is the ad network du jour. Eventually, it'll be just as easy for an affiliate to join CPM, CPL and CPA networks. Or the CPM-CPA balancing act might all be managed through one network.

Bottom line: Certain content has lots of cash money incentives to be aggregated, searchable and foundable. All actors in the game want this stuff set free and everywhere you want to be: individuals, businesses, publishers. These pieces of information are situations wanted (eg job descriptions), events (tickets for sale), items for sale or rent. I am sure there are others. But, these will happen the quickest. The publisher wants the info out there in as many places as possible. The consumer individual wants to find them as easy as possible. From a business perspective, these are the easiest types of content to aggregate from a distributed publishing system (eg the internet).  There's no royalties to publishers. There's no reason for a publisher/seller/buyer to hide the fact that they have these things available or want these things. And there are lots of buyers and sellers, applicants and attendees that are looking.

However, the aggregators, unless they are bought by AGILEAMY, will not have enough clout to be bigger than the transaction platform players, Amazon, Ebay, Google, AzoogleAds, etc, the ones that pay affiliates. So, the transaction platform players/the affiliate program owners, stand to make the most cash from the Long Tail. As more and more content is created for free, and aggregated so that the sum is valuable, advertising inventory becomes a lot cheaper.

Clarification: When I say "affiliates", I am not just referring to pay for performance ad networks like commission junction. I am referring to any ad network that pays an affiliate for driving traffic.
