CNET Mixes Business with Pleasure

At first, I thought the acquisition of a dating site by CNET was extremely weird. Especially, given all of the consolidation in the dating industry, and increasing competition from FREE social networking sites, that enable contact without payment.

Then, I read and thought about it a bit more. And I've warmed up to it quite a bit.

1st. I like this because it caters to their key demographic (techies).

2nd. Consumating is the best place to find that special UNIQUE someone. Tags enable people to sort and search on more than just pre-defined fields. (Match just added them.) This is kind of an interim step between what I think the future of dating is, where each individual defines what information they'd like to know about their prospective partners. Or maybe tags is all the info people need. Maybe I am over thinking it. Serendipity certainly plays a role. Anyways, this is smart. Dating sites haven't innovated much since the "wink" let people express their interest in a click of the mouse. Tagging certainly helps people learn more about other people. And it certainly has applications beyond dating. Such as networking for business. Hmmmm

3rd. Hell. Why not? Dating is a profitable business. CNET certainly can drive some significant traffic and brand awareness. I can't imagine it had a big ticket price. Why not make a go of it.

Now. What online dating company will figure out how to successfully jump into offline events?  I think that is a sweet spot, that a bunch of the dating companies failed at. More on that later.
